Some years ago industries had more freedom than they have now, and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them. Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them; often conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the causes of the disaster or the problems. I had an experience some years ago which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January., I Had to officiate at two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died "full of years", as the Bible would say; both yielded to the nor- mal wearing out of the body after a long and full life. Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condo- fence (吊唁) calls on the two families on the same afternoon.
At the first home, the son of the deceased (已故的) woman said to me, "If only 1 had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died." At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, "If only I hadn’t insisted on my mother’s going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride, the abrupt change of climate, was more than she could take
