[简答题]When I am in a serious humor, I very often walk by myself in Westminster Abbey; where the gloominess of the place, and the use which it is applied, with the solemnity of the building, and the condition of the people who lie in it, are apt to fill the mind with a kind of melancholy, or rather thoughtfulness, that is not disagreeable I yesterday passed a whole afternoon in the churchyard, the cloisters, and the church, amusing myself with the tombstones and inscriptions that I met with in those several regions of the dead. Most of them recorded nothing else of ~e buried person, but that he was born upon one day, and died upon another; the whole history of his life being comprehended in those two circumstances, that are common to all mankind could not but look upon these registers of existence, whether of brass or marble, as a kind of satire upon the departed persons; who had left no other memorial of them, but that they were horn and that they died.
[单项选择]Analysts have had their go at humor, and I have read sortie of this interpretative literature, but without being greatly instructed. Humor can be dissected, as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards (内在部分) are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind.
In a newsreel theatre the other day I saw a picture of a man who had developed the soap bubble to a higher point than it had ever before reached. He had become the ace soap bubble blower of America, had perfected the business of blowing bubbles, refined it, doubled it, squared it, and had even worked himself up into a convenient lather. The effect was not pretty. Some of the bubbles were too big to be beautiful, and the blower was always jumping into them or out of them, or playing some sort of unattractive trick with them. It was, if anything, a rather repulsive sight. Humor is a little like that: it won’t stand much blowing up, and it won’t stand much poking. It has a certain fragility, an evasiveness
A. just as scientists can dissect a frog, so analysts can dissect humor
B. detailed, scientific analysis is not appropriate for humor, for it may make humor lose its aesthetic value
C. some people’s analysis of humor are too scientific
D. analysts’ attempts at humor are not instructive enough to interest the author

A. declined
B. sent
C. accepted
D. received
[填空题]How can I have put _____ a pound since yesterday I’ve eaten nothing.
[单项选择]

I wasn’t too fond of the lecture classes of 400 students that were in my general courses. Halfway through my second term, when I was considering whether or not to come back in the fall, I went on the Internet and came across AmeriCorps. Then I joined the organization. And that was what I did last school year. I worked on making roads, building a house and serving as a teacher’s assistant. It’s been a great experience.
And I’ve almost learned more than what I could have in college. Since I didn’t really want to ha at that school and I wasn’t interested in my major anyway, I think this was better for me. After 1,700 hours of service, I received 4,750 dollars. I can use that to pay off the money I harrowed from the banks or for what I need when I go hack to school this fall at Columbus State in Ohio. Classes are smaller there, and I’ll be majoring in German education. After working with the kids, now I know I want to be a teacher.A. They were personally rewarding.
B. They should be part of school life.
C. They gave him a chance to learn German.
