[单项选择]Passage 2
Television carries more national advertising than any other in the United States. The same is true in some smaller countries such as Spain and Portugal, where it is the only medium reaching a general national audience. In many countries—Sweden and Denmark, for example, the state-owned television, accepts no advertising. In many other countries the amount of commercial time is extremely limited, as in France, Germany, and Italy. Soviet state-owned television began accepting a limited amount of advertising in 1988.
The chief reason for the popularity of television among United States advertisers is that it reaches a vast number of people at the same time. While it can cost well over 100,000 dollars, a 30-second commercial on network television can be seen and heard by as many as 25 million viewers. For manufacturers who must make prospects aware of their products and convince them of its benefits immediately, there is nothing as efficient as television advertising.
A. Portugal

Passage Five
More and more, the operations of our
businesses, governments, and financial institutions are controlled by
information that exists only inside computer memories. Anyone clever enough to
modify this information for his own purposes can reap big reward. Even worse, a
number of people who have done this and been caught at it have managed to get
away without punishment. It’s easy for computer crimes to go
undetected if no one checks up on what the computer is doing. But even if the
crime is detected, the criminal may walk away not only unpunished but with a
glowing recommendation from his former employers. Of course, we
have no statistics on crimes that go undetected. But it’s disturbing to note how
many of the crimes we do know about were detected by accident, not by systematic
inspections or other security procedures. The com A. most computer criminals who are caught blame their bad luck B. the rapid increase of computer crimes is a troublesome problem C. most computer criminals are smart enough to cover up their crimes D. many more computer crimes go undetected that arc discovered

[单项选择] Passage 3
More than 30000 drivers and front seat
passengers are killed or seriously injured each year. At a speed of only 30
miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third floor window. Wearing a
seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more
than half. Therefore drivers of front seat passengers over 14 in
most vehicles must wear a seat belt. If you do not, you could be fined up to
£50. It will not be up to the drivers to make sure you wear your belt. But it
will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 do not
ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind.
However, you do not have to wear a seat belt if you are reversing your
vehicle or you are making a local delivery or collection using a special
vehicle; or if you have a valid medical certificate w A. a medical magazine B. a police report C. a legal document D. a government information booklet

expulsions in 1996—1997, against 7% for rifles (步枪) or shotguns and 35% for
other types of firearms. "The report is a clear sign that our
nation’s public schools are cracking down (严惩) on students who bring guns to
school," Education Secretary Richard Riley said in a statement.
In March 1997, an 11-year old boy and a 13-year old boy using handguns and
