The New York Public Library is a (11) very special place. Even though it is in (14) the busiest part of the city, it has grass and trees around, and benches for people to sit on. Even more unusual in crowded New York, its rooms are very large. The roof of the Main Reading Room is (12) fifty-one feet high. Here, a reader can sit and think and work in comfort. And what books there are to work with! The library has (13) over thirty million books and paintings. It owns one of the first copies of a Shakespeare play, a Bible printed by Gutenberg in the 15th century, and a letter written by Columbus in which he told of finding (15) the new world.

New York, London, Paris and other big cities are exciting places to live in. There are many interesting things to see and to do. You can go to different kinds of museums, plays and films. You can also go to shopping centers to buy things from all over the world.
But there are serious problems in big cities too. The cost of living is high, and there are too many people in some places of big cities. Every year many people move to big cities because of the chances to find jobs, to study at schools, and to receive good medical care. But sometimes these people cannot find work or a good place to live in. Also, too many people in a small space make it hard to keep the cities safe and clean.
Some people enjoy living in big cities. Others do not. Before people move to a big city, they should think about the possible problems of living there.

A house in New York caught fire on (Q11)Christmas Eve, 1982. The woman who lived in the house was already in her eighties. Because she was (Q12)in poor health, she had trouble in walking even when things were fine. Her house was burning around her, but she was unable to go anywhere. The smoke made it difficult for her to breathe. (Q13) Fire fighters searched through the house. They started to put the fire out. But they didn’ t know that the old woman was still inside. A man dressed like Father Christmas was passing by. He was on his way to give gifts to (Q14)poor families. As soon as he heard the old woman’ s cry, he ran into the burning house. After a while, he rushed out with the old woman on his back and carried her to safety. Ten minutes later, (Q15)the house fell down.
