What Is Type 1 Diabetes

When you eat, your body takes the sugar from food and turns it into fuel. (46) . Your body uses glucose (葡萄糖) for energy, so it can do everything from breathing air to playing a video game. But glucose cannot be used by the body on its own--it needs hormone called insulin to bring is into the cells of the body.
Most people get the insulin they need from the pancreas; a large organ near the stomach. The pancreas makes insulin; insulin brings glucose into the cells; and the body gets the energy it needs. When a person has Type 1 diabetes, it is because the pancreas is not making insulin. So someone could be eating lots of food and getting all the glucose he needs, but without insulin, there is no way for the body to use the glucose for energy. (47) .
You may have heard older people talk about having diabetes, maybe people of your grandparents’ age. Usually, this is a different kind of diabetes

Set Your Body’s Time Clock

Our Body Operates Like a Clock
[A] As the first rays of sunlight filter over the hills of California’s Silicon Valley, Charles Winget opens his eyes. It is barely 5 a.m., but Winget is raring (渴望) to go. Meanwhile, his wife pulls up the covers and buries her face under the pillow. "For the past fifteen years," says Winget, "We’ve hardly ever gotten up together."
[B] The Wingets’ situation is not uncommon. Our bodies operate with the complexity of clocks, and like clocks, we all run at slightly different speeds. Winget is a morning person. His wife is not at her best until after nightfall.
[C] Behavioral scientists long attributed such differences to personal eccentricities or early conditioning. This thinking was challenged in the late 1950s by a theory labeled chronobiology by physician- biologist Franz Halberg. In a Harvard University laboratory, Dr. Halberg found that c
[单项选择]Your mind like your body is a thing where the powers are developed by effort. This is a principal use, as I see it, of hard work in studies. Unless you train your body you can’t be a good sportsman, and unless you train your mind you can’t be much of a scholar. The four mi- les a boatman covers at top speed is in itself nothing to the good, but the physical capacity to hold out over the distance is thought to be of some value. So a good part of what you learn by hard study may not be retained forever, and may not seem to be of much final value, but your mind is a better and more powerful instrument because you have learned it. "Knowledge is power," but still more the ability of acquiring and using knowledge is power. If you have a trained and powerful mind, you are bound to have stored it with something, its value is more in what it can do, what it can grasp and use, than in what it contains; and if it were possible, as it is not, to come out of college with a trained mind and nothing
