In order to tell you what I believe, I must briefly bring up something from my personal history. The turning point of my life was my decision to give up a promising career in business to study music. My parents, although sympathetic, disapproved of music as an occupation. This was understandable; I thought, in view of my family background.
My grandfather taught music for nearly forty years at Spring Hill College. Despite being greatly respected m the community, he earned barely enough to provide for his large family. My father often said that it was only because my grandfather was so economical that the wolves were kept at bay. As a consequence of this example in the family, the very mention of music as a career carried with it the idea of an uncertain existence. Now I’ll tell you why I want a change between classes. Mrs. Brooks, I really like my teacher and my classmates, but I find it very hard not to speak in my own language. I’m surrounded by other people from my country so it’s natural that we all speak in our mother tongue. I have been looking around for a class where there are very few other people from my country so I will be forced to use English. The best class I can find is the evening class which begins at 6 p.m. Most of the students in that class come from countries which speak Spanish, and ! can’t speak a word so I must use English. I checked the class list, and two students have dropped out of the evening class so there should be room for me. Could you please see if I can join the class I’m not sure what the class number is, but the evening class I want is in Room 305 of the Trotter Building.
