[填空题]Passage Ten Scientists have been finding evidence of life inside meteorites for well over 100 years — that, or the building blocks of life. The claims of life have proved false every time. It always turns out to be a wishful interpretation of chemicals, minerals and tiny structures inside the meteorite that could be the fossilized long-dead bacteria — but almost certainly aren’t.

A. the greenhouse gas effect produced by human activities tends to have a much greater environmental effect than that of volcanic explosions
B. clouds of sulfur-rich gases tend to achieve greater heights in the stratosphere than do ash clouds
C. a particular explosion producing high sulfur and little ash had a greater environmental effect than the converse
D. the burning of fossil fuels tends to exacerbate the effects of sulfurous aerosols, but not those of ash clouds

A. Many climbers, lulled into a false sense of security, use the new equipment to attempt climbing feats of which they are not capable.
B. Some mountain-climbing injuries are caused by unforeseeable weather conditions.
C. Mountain climbing, although a dangerous sport, does not normally result in injury to the experienced climber.
D. In the past ten years there have been improvements in mountain-climbing techniques as well as in mountain-climbing equipment.

Passage 1
Scientists discovered that atoms of some substances are radioactive. This means that they are unstable and can be split. The chain of splitting atoms releases great destructive energy and it was this discovery which led scientists to develop the idea of an atomic bomb. The American government secretly worked to produce such a bomb and the first version was much more powerful than anyone had thought.
By this time, the World War Ⅱ had ended in Europe. But the Japanese refused to surrender, the Americans decided that by dropping an atomic bomb on Japan, they could end the war quickly and save more of their soldier’s lives.
Soon after midnight on 6 August 1945, a bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, a civilian target. No warning was given and there was total devastation. Almost all the buildings were destroyed and more t

B. was dropped in Nagasaki
C. was a failure
D. was tested in desert
[单项选择]Passage Four
Scientists are closely concerned with the structure of buildings and with the quality of building materials. The World Health Organization(WHO) observes that the introduction of air conditioning and energy conservation measures have been accompanied by growing problems of indoor air quality. Some pollutants arise from insulation products, some from moving cars, and others from modern housing materials. As many Europeans spend up to 90% of their lives in buildings, the health effects of the indoor climate are very important.
Some construction materials, including fiberboard, insulation foams and certain glues for man-made wood floor boards, for example, gives out organic products such as formaldehyde(甲). Heat and humidity increase the release of formaldehyde and the gas seriously harms the eyes. Paint, lacquer, etc. can also release dangerous gas into indoor air.
Construction materials can cause serious damage, especially when they cont
A. Some building materials pollute indoor air.
B. Some factors cause indoor air pollution.
C. Asbestos can cause lung cancer.
D. The land on which houses are built contributes to indoor pollution.
[单项选择]Passage Four
Scientists are hoping to eliminate malaria (疟疾) by developing a genetically modified mosquito that cannot transmit the disease. Malaria has long troubled the populations of South America, Africa, and Asia, where mosquito bites infect up to 500 million people a year with this serious and sometimes fatal parasitic blood disease. For generations, scientists have been trying to eliminate malaria by developing new drugs and using pesticides (杀虫剂) to wipe out local mosquito populations. But these measure aren’t working--and some scientists, like Greg Lanzaro, say that because of drug resistance and population changes, malaria is actually more prevalent now than it was 20 years ago. Lanzaro says he has a better way to stop the spread of malaria: genetically modifying mosquitoes so they are unable to carry the disease.
Lanzaro and his.
A. start to eliminate malaria
B. cure parasitic blood diseases
C. prevent mice from transmitting parasites
D. acquire immunity against malaria
