Passage Three
To us it seems so natural to put up an
umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was not
invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against the
sun. Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was
used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way
back in the eleventh century B.C. We know that the umbrella was
used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing
connected with its use: it became a symbol of honor and authority. In the Far
East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by
those in high office. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to
use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient
Greece. But it is believed that the first persons A. protection against rain B. a shade against the sun C. a symbol of power D. a symbol of honor

[单项选择] Passage 1
Let us assume, for the moment, that
labor m not prepared to work for a lower money-wage and that a reduction in the
existing level of money-wages would lead, through strikes or otherwise, to a
withdrawal from the labor market of labor which is now employed. Does it follow
from this that the existing level of real wages accurately measures the marginal
disutility of labor Not necessarily. For, although a reduction in the existing
money-wage would lead to a withdrawal of labor, it does not follow that a fall
in the value of the existing money-wage in terms of wage-goods would do so, if
it were due to a rise in the price of the latter. In other words, it may be the
case that within a certain range the demand of labor is for a minimum money-wage
and not for a minimum real wage. The classical school has tacitly assumed that
this would A. a fall in the value of the existing money-wage would lead to a withdrawal of labor B. a rise in the price of wage-goods would lead to a withdrawal of labor C. the demand of labor is for a rise of existing money-wage D. the demand of labor is for reduction in the value of real wages
[简答题]
Passage 1 The US dollar value of Chinese exports increased at an average rate of almost 18 per cent per annum between 1978 and 1983, while imports increased by approximately 11 per cent per annum. As a result, the visible trade surplus rose sharply from US $1.4 billion in 1981 to US $4.4 billion in 1982 and US$3.7 billion in 1983. Exports grew much faster than imports during this period not only because of the strong emphasis placed on exporting by China’s economic planners, but also because a number of industrial projects were postponed in 1979. Official recognition that foreign technology could play a major role in modernising the Chinese economy had caused imports to rise by more than 50 per cent in 1978 placing undue strain on the national economy. Grain imports have fallen sharply over the past few years—China became a net grain exporter in 1984—and in 1983 the country started to export soyabeans and cotton.
