Thanksgiving Day comes on the fourth Thursday in November. All the stores, tanks, schools, and offices close. The people can spend the day with their families. When the first English colonists landed in 1620 near Cape Corn, Massachusetts, their first year was very hard. The winter was much colder than they were used to and many people died.
With the Indians’ help, conditions began to improve in the spring of 1621. In the fall, they had a good harvest. There were plenty of vegetables and fruit. They also caught a lot of fish and wild animals. At this moment, they looked back over the past year. They were both regretful and thankful. Only fifty of the original one hundred people survived. On the other hand, they were happy to see new hope for the future. They knew they had enough food for the next winter. "The worst is over," said one of the leaders. "We should thank God for his goodness to us. Let’s have a day of thanksgiving.

Here are little cars that may some day take the place of today’s cars. If everyone drives such a car in the future, there will be less pollution in the air. There will also be more parking spaces in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. Three such cars fit in the space now needed for one car of the usual size. The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer, too, as these little cars can go only 55 miles per hour. The cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips.
