As one works with color in a practical
or experimental way, one is impressed by two apparently unrelated facts. Color
as seen is a mobile changeable thing depending to a large extent on the
relationship of the color to other colors seen simultaneously. It is not
fixed in its relation to the direct stimulus which creates it. On the other
hand, the properties of surfaces that give rise to color do not seem to change
greatly under a wide variety of illumination colors, usually (but not always)
looking much the same in artificial light as in daylight. Both of these effects
seem to be due in large part to the mechanism of color adaptation mentioned
earlier. When the eye is fixed on a colored area, there is an
immediate readjustment of the sensitivity of the eye to color in and around the
area viewed. This readjustment does not immedi A. the adaptation of the eye to color B. the color of colors C. the properties of colored surfaces D. the effect of changes in color intensity
[单项选择] Passage One
If you dream in color, you’re not
alone: the majority of people today claim to have. colorful dreams. But it
wasn’t ’always thus. Research conducted in the early part of the last century
consistently found that people reported dreaming most often in black and
white. According to Eva Murzyn at the University of Dundee, there are at least
two possible explanations for this strange anomaly(反常). The
first is methodological. The early studies tended to use questionnaires, whereas
more modern studies use dream diaries (filled in upon rising in the morning) or
so-called "REM-awakening", which involves interrupting people’s dream-filled
periods of sleep to find out what they were dreaming about. People’s memories of
their dreams are likely to be less accurate using the questionnaire approach and
more likely to reflect lay(世俗的) beliefs A. people’s dreams were not completed B. people can’t remember their dreams exactly C. it has no connection with people’s diaries D. it provides too many choices for people to choose
[多项选择]Now read the passage about E-books. You will have 45 seconds to read the passage. Begin reading now. Reading Time: 45 seconds E-books Although mainstream acceptance remains a few years down the road, E-books appear to be on their way. The early success of Stephen King’s internet-only work, The Plant, has shown that the medium is beginning to catch on, though significant hurdles remain before it, gains widespread popularity. Several publishers have established E-book divisions exclusively devoted to the technology, and both Amazon. com and bn. com (Barnes & Noble’s online venue) have created spaces on their sites to handle E-books. The new technology has a number of advantages over its paper relation, called the "P-book" by those in the publishing industry, posing the question as to whether they outweigh the seemingly irreplaceable intimacy shared between reader and his tree-born, black-and-white typed companion. {$mediaurl}

[单项选择] Passage Three
If women are mercilessly exploited (剥削)
year after year, they are only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the
thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are
always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which
have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of
fashion. When you come to think of it, only a woman is capable of standing in
front of a wardrobe (衣柜) packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she
has nothing to wear. Changing fashions are nothing more than the
intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to
replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw
away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time altering the dresses they
have. Skirts are lengthened o A. by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry B. because they are capable of predicting new fashions C. by constantly changing the fashion in women’ s clothing D. because they attach great importance to quality in women’s clothing
